Adoption Services Backed By Four Decades of Experience
For consensual adoptions, the adoption process can be fairly simple. Our attorneys will work as swiftly as possible to secure your family’s future. However, in some instances, it is necessary to take legal action in custody and adoption matters. For some families there may be alternative solutions such as a guardianship or a petition for non-parental custody orders (in loco parentis).
Step-Parent Adoption
Frequently a step-parent has filled the void of a biological parent and there may be a legal basis to formalize the relationship as a parent. In some step-parent adoptions, the child’s other birth parent may need to consent to the adoption because he or she is the other legally recognized parent. If the other birth parent refuses to give consent, has abandoned the child, or cannot be found, there are alternative ways to proceed with a step-parent adoption.
Instances where a parent may be able to pursue a severance and/or adoption include:
- Abandonment
- Incarceration
- Physical Abuse
- Sexual Abuse
- Neglect
- Mental Illness
- Alcohol or Drug Addiction
The termination of someone’s parental rights, particularly when contested, can be very difficult to accomplish, and requires the support of lawyers with extensive experience and knowledge of Arizona law. Our founding attorney is the creator of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Adoptive Parents Unit.
